space affiliated to Nirox Foundation’s sculpture park and residency located 45
minutes outside of Johannesburg, in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind. The

artists. NIROXprojects, 264 Fox Street, Arts on Main, Maboneng Precinct,
Johannesburg CBD.
The group exhibition I take it all back, aims to expose the
instances between vulnerability and security, so often presented as an
underlying dialogue within the works of the exhibiting artists.
The show explores aspects of shame, vulnerability, excess and
embarrassment. It justifies the freedom and honesty that comes with not holding
anything back – negotiating a sense of transparency, the works are a variation
of works including photography, painting sculpturing, and fine arts.
There’s a variation of artist that are displaying their work, because this exhibition is Mixed Media therefore there is different types of works.
The mediums displayed in
this exhibition vary from, photography, painting, sculpture and multimedia. The
exhibition explores a gallery space that embodies the norms and boundaries, and
the liminal space in between. This threshold becomes the breathing space, the
contemplation of the dialogue that has been exposed within the constructed
space.
I take it all back filters the relationship between the chaos
and the more considered version thereof.
The exhibition alludes therefore, to
the ambiguous and the risky, and plots a relationship between the space and the
viewer. The relationship between the exhibition to the local
content is very different because I take it all back attempts to mediate the
madness, yet also provide a space for it to exist in society.
Curated by Maaike Bakker
& Jayne Crawshay-Hall NIROX projects is a gallery space affiliated to Nirox
Foundation’s sculpture park, and is a very liberated space in terms of the
displaying of the works, with good lighting to add more life to the gallery
making the overall presentation of the works work together as a whole, so I
think that the curatorial decisions taken when it comes to displaying the
images play a major role to the works working together to create a visually
appealing space.
The title of the work is “SUCK
ME SLOWLY UNTIL I DISAPPEAR” (RED ROCKET FLAVOUR) (2014)
ISABEL MERTZ is the artist; the medium of the work is sculpturing
The appearance of the work
is hard candy, with a variation of different dimensions to show the work in a
more interesting way. The work shows us how the artist might have love for
sweet things, telling by the way the work has been sculptured in a very well
composed manner, with her paying careful attention to the colour and the detail
of every piece, in order for it to create unity through the form of different
shapes. I think that the conceptual intentions of the work is to show an ironic
side to life, telling by the title of the work ”SUCK ME SLOWLY UNTIL I
DISAPEAR”, I get an idea from the artist, who might be trying to communicate
something quite serious but could be misunderstood at the same time.
The context of the work might also be telling us
that we should live life to the fullest potential until we get what it is that
we want in order for us to succeed
